The way the Eiffel Tower pops up in views from all over the city has been a reliable source of amusement for me through the years: “Oh, there it is again!” (I know, it doesn’t take much.)  While you expect to see la Tour in panoramic vistas, sometimes you’ll catch a glimpse peeking out over some rooftops, between a narrow gap in buildings, or through some trees. Henri Riviere’s Thirty-Six Views of the Eiffel Tower captures this phenomenon — and the Paris of his day — beautifully.
